Monterrey, Mexico’s third largest city and is the capital city of the northeastern Mexican state of Nuevo León and a municipality of the same name. Also known as "Sultana del Norte" (Northern Sultan), Monterrey is one of the three most important cities in all Mexico and a modern industrial and business center. The city proper has population of 1.1 million, and the metropolitan area of Monterrey has a population of 3.8 million.
A powerhouse of business and industry, this city is one of the most important production and trade centers in the country. Monterrey is also a powerhouse in the business arena and some of Mexico's largest companies are based in Monterrey. The city is often called the richest city in Mexico. Monterrey was ranked as the most secure city in Latin America and Mexico in 2005, and one of the two most secure in 2006.
The mountains surrounding Monterrey offer a breathtaking landscape containing many canyons, trails and roads crossing deserts and forests. Suitable trails are available for all from casual hikers to expert rockclimbers. The Sierra Madre Oriental mountains south of the city are included in the "Parque Nacional Cumbres de Monterrey" (National Park), which was added to UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Program of Biosphere Reserves in 2006.
Tec de Monterrey
Monterrey is headquarters one of the most prestigious private universities in Latin America: the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, or ITESM (Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Studies / Tec de Monterrey). As the centre of it own educational network, it boasts 33 campuses and agreements with other universities in America, Europe and Asia. Its reputation, especially for MBA and other administrative and technological programmes is solidly established. The whole programme is taught in English.
